In 2014 and 2017, the City of Chicago Mayor’s Office published reports detailing analysis of guns recovered by the Chicago Police Department, in partnership with the University of Chicago Crime Lab. These analyses demonstrated that Chicago, relative to peer cities like Los Angeles and New York, has a much higher rate of illegal gun recovery. Using trace data, these reports also revealed that many crime guns used in Chicago were originally purchased in neighboring states such as Indiana and Wisconsin, and at a handful of suburban gun stores in Illinois.
