One Aim IL GVP Coalition Policy Priorities 2024

The One Aim Illinois Gun Violence Prevention Coalition, comprising over 200+ member organizations statewide, advocates for meaningful change. Our coalition stands firm in our commitment to advocating for measures that put survivors first, protect vulnerable communities, and create a future free from the threat of gun violence.

The legislation below are statewide priorities and reflect the collective efforts and consensus of the coalition, representing a unified vision for addressing gun violence in our communities.

Homicide Victims’ Families’ Rights Act – HB 4753 (Rep. Buckner)

  • Addresses low homicide clearance rates across the state of Illinois, strengthening community trust in police and increasing participation in investigations.

Karina’s Bill – SB2633 (Sen. Villanueva) & HB4469 (Rep. Hirschauer)

  • Clarifies and strengthens the law to require a firearm to be removed  when a domestic violence survivor is granted the firearm remedy in an order of protection

Safe Gun Storage – SB3527 (Ellman) & HB5065 (Hirschsauer)

  • Strengthens Illinois’ Safe Firearm Storage Act, providing that it is unlawful for any person to store or leave a firearm outside of that person’s immediate possession or control unless the firearm is unloaded and secured in a lock box or container in a manner that renders it inaccessible to anyone but the owner or another lawfully authorized user. 

Truth and Accuracy in Offense Titles -SB2864 (Cervantes) & HB4500 (Buckner)

  • Creates truth and accuracy in Illinois’ weapons possession statutes by renaming “use” to “possession.” It will also make these name changes retroactive so individuals who have faced bias for years because of their records can start to move forward.

Homicide Data Transparency Bill – HB 4754 (Rep. Buckner)

  • Amends the Uniform Crime Reporting Act and requires Illinois law enforcement agencies to record and publish monthly homicide data for the public.

Lost and Stolen Guns – HB5595 (Rep. Olickal) & SB3737 (Sen. Villivalam)

  • Reduces the number of lost or stolen firearms that are later used to commit crimes by requiring education to firearm owners about lost and stolen firearms and strengthening the current law

ICJIA-GRANT CHRC – LIVEFREE IL Healing Resource Center Funding – SB3226 (Sen. Johnson) 

  • Appropriates $10,000,000 from the General Revenue Fund to the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Agency for grants to Community Resource Healing Centers (CHRC)for their operational expenses.

Crime Victims Compensation Act – SB 3713 (Sen. Peters) & HB 3596 (Rep. West)

  • Expands access to the Crime Victims Compensation program
